HAMLER — Miller City and Ottawa-Glandorf are no strangers to each other this ACME baseball season.
The two Putnam County squads have met four times this summer, including twice this past week in the ACME sectional tournament. On Sunday, the two teams will see each other again, this time in the District 2 ACME district tournament winners bracket at Patrick Henry. The Wildcats and Titans will play at noon Sunday after both teams posted wins in the tournament Saturday.
In district action Saturday, Miller City defeated Patrick Henry 9-0, while O-G outlasted Pettisville 7-5 in eight innings.
In the second game Saturday afternoon O-G jumped on the Black Birds for a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Pettisville slowly worked themselves back into the game scoring a run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the third inning. Both teams scored in the fourth inning for a 5-4 O-G lead.
The Titans were one out away from wrapping up the game in the seventh when the Black Birds scored the tying run on a throwing error.
O-G came right back in the top of the eighth to score two runs on a Pettisville error.
With one out in the O-G eighth, Austin Verhoff doubled down the left field line and Brent Ellerbrock followed with a single. Noah Recker followed with a single to left and when the leftfielder for Pettisville let the ball get by him and roll all the way to the fence Verhoff and Ellerbrock scored and Recker reached third base. Jordan Diemer followed with a flyball to centerfield with Recker tagging up. Pettisville's centerfielder fired a strike to the plate to cut down Recker trying to score.
In the bottom of the eighth Pettisville went in order to end the game.
Verhoff picked up the win for O-G in relief of starter Ryan Maas. Both pitchers worked four innings.
Diemer had three hits for the Titans, while Ellerbrock and Recker both had two.
Tate Kauffman took the loss for Pettisville.
In the opener, Miller City scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and rode the pitching of Ross Lehman to the win.
Lehman scattered six hits in going the distance with nine strikeouts. Three times in the game Patrick Henry had runners at second and third and one out and could not score.
Jackson Lammers, Jacob Schimmoeller and Logan Dukes all had two hits for Miller City.
Kyler Seemann took the loss for Patrick Henry. Joe Nickels had three hits for the Patriots.
