OTTAWA -Fourth grade students in Jill Schumaker's Ottawa Elementary School class received letters on Tuesday, special messages that were penned, typed and, in one case, drawn by United States Army service persons who are currently stationed in Afghanistan. The letters were hand-delivered by the wife of one of the soldiers.
"It all started when my husband asked if he could take our newspapers into work after we read them," explained Schumaker.
One of her husband's coworkers sent articles from those newspapers to her husband stationed overseas. Schumaker decided to seize the moment to virtually transport her students beyond headlines and news reports, as well as to show support for the soldiers.
"Since it's impossible to bring our students there, I asked if we could become pen pals," she said.
The fourth graders jumped at the opportunity to connect with the soldier. Read more about the exchange in Wednesday's Sentinel.
