Donald Wesley Lammers, 88 years old, passed away quietly Tuesday July 23, 2013, at 8:40 a.m., leaving his beloved wife Angela and many, many family and friends thankful for his life but heartbroken at his leaving. His was a life well lived. Those who knew him described him as someone who never met a stranger.
Don has a resume similar to many in the Greatest Generation. He was born in Miller City, on Aug. 19, 1924, the 11th of 12 children of Wesley and Katherine Lammers. He graduated from Saints Peter and Paul High School in 1943. He served in World War II in the Merchant Marines and was honorably discharged on Oct. 22, 1944.
Don married his high school sweetheart, Angela Rose Hermiller, on April 22, 1946, and they enjoyed 67 years together. During that time, they raised five children, Douglas J. Lammers (Susan Hennessey) of Ocala, Fla.; Steven R. Lammers (Leah Risser) of Columbus Grove; Philip K. Lammers (Joy Henderson) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; Guy W. Lammers (Brenda Young) of Mantua, Ohio; Bruce P. Lammers (Kathy Anspach) of Ocala. His children blessed him with 15 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
His work life included a long stint at the Ottawa Sylvania plant from 1951 to 1981. He then had a short stint for IDS insurance. In 1987, he moved to Ocala, Fla. to be close to two of his sons. While there, he spent more than 20 years working as a starter at different Ocala golf courses. It was a perfect retirement job for him, giving him daily opportunities to talk with many golfers.
Services were on Saturday, July 27, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Springs, Ocala, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Interfaith Emergency Services, Ocala, Florida (Iesmarion.org) or Feed the Children, a national organization (feedthechildren.org).
He was buried in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Ocala, Florida.
Grandchildren, in birth order, are Melissa Walker (husband Tony; grandchildren Spencer, Sierra), Eric Lammers (Michelle; Dalton, Lauren), Kevin Lammers (Meagan), Sean Lammers (Kira), Neil Lammers, Alexandria Cooper (Shane; Wesley), Meredith Simmons (Marty), Rheta McKnight (Doug), Courtney Lammers, Vant Lammers, Kylie Lammers, Donald Lammers, Ryan Lammers, Thomas Lammers, and Savanna Lammers.
