James V. Verhoff
COLUMBUS GROVE - James V. Verhoff, 78, died at 10:37 a.m. Feb. 26, 2013, at St. Rita's Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Nov. 22, 1934, in Lima to George and Charlotte Kissell Verhoff, who preceded him in death. On June 19, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Myers, who survives.
Mr. Verhoff was 1952 graduate of Columbus Grove High School and received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1956 from Ohio Northern University, Ada. He worked in the family business, Verhoff Lumber Co., Columbus Grove, throughout high school, college and his early married years. As a civil engineer he first worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation, after which he worked for Harper Supply Inc., Napoleon, from which he retired. During his retirement he worked with the Northwest Fuel Injection Co., Columbus Grove.
He was a life member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove, where he was a member of the choir, a communion distributor, a lector and a CCD teacher. He also served on the St. Anthony school board and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1757, Ottawa.
Community activities included serving for more than 55 years on the Columbus Grove Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as secretary. He had been a member of the Columbus Grove school board and Columbus Grove Village Council. For many years, he was very active as a Boy Scout leader. His leadership and work in scouting led to his receiving the St. George Award, the pinnacle award of Scouting Leaders. He was a Vigil in The Order of the Arrow.
He loved his family especially his perfect grandkids and great-grandkids. Saturday morning doughnuts will never be the same.
Survivors also include seven children, Vanessa (James) Karcher and James (Debra) Verhoff, both of Columbus Grove, Rebecca (Paul "Mike") Schimmoeller, of Glandorf, and Rachael Jay, Sarah (Douglas) Martin, Robert (Tonia) Verhoff and Kathleen (Richard) Yinger, all of Columbus Grove; two brothers, Richard (Jacque) Verhoff, of Sycamore, and George (Johneen) Verhoff, of Columbus Grove; a sister, Madalyn "Butch" (George) Donaldson, of Columbus Grove; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Verhoff, Eloise Verhoff and Gladys Verhoff, all of Columbus Grove; 17 grandchildren, Anthony (Morganne) Karcher, Melinda (Allen) Utendorf, Stephanie (Matt) Ream, James (Tiffany) Verhoff, Christina Verhoff, Genevieve (Daniel) Hernandez, Anna (Eric Ogle) Verhoff, Eric (Nichole) Wilcox, Andrea Schimmoeller, Wade Schimmoeller, Matthew Jay, Cassandra Jay, Brock Verhoff, Mya Verhoff, Jasmine Yinger, Alton Tanner Yinger and Kyrah Yinger; and 15 great-grandchildren, Autymn Phillips, Wyatt Karcher, Blaine Peterson, Owen Karcher, Jocelyn Peterson, Korryn Karcher, Arianna Ream, Cortland Ream, Myka Ream, Landen Wilcox, Jaden Wilcox, Kiersten Yinger and three more to be born this year.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jordan Schimmoeller; three brothers, Robert, Theodore and Joseph Verhoff; two sisters, Judy (Lowell) Steele and infant Frances Verhoff; and a brother-in-law, William (Peg) Myers.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Columbus Grove. Father Tom Extejt and Deacon Jim Dunn officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove.
