CLOVERDALE — Joan Alice Heitzman, 82, of Cloverdale, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 14, 2014 at The Meadows of Kalida. She was born September 4, 1931 in Palmer Twp, the youngest child to the late Malcolm and Violet (Preble) Brooks. On March 14, 1953 she married Dan H. Heitzman who survives in Kalida.

Joan is survived by her children, Daniel J. (Jean) Heitzman and Douglas Heitzman both of Continental and Debra (Jeff) Martin of Ottawa. Grandchildren, Jennifer (Mike) Gasser of Ft. Jennings, Derek (Joy) Heitzman of Continental, Keri (Dave) Shaffer Defiance, Ashley (Randy) Verhoff of Continental, and Marc Heitzman of Hamler. Great Grandchildren, Bryce, Wyatt and Loryn Gasser, Dane Heitzman, Mason Shaffer and Brody Verhoff. One Brother, Gerald (Helen) Brooks of Bluffton, sister-in-laws, Eunice Brooks of Continental and Jean Brooks of Bear Lake, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Virginia Brooks and Phyllis Fabian and brothers Donald, William and Richard Brooks, great grandchildren, Nathan and Mallory Gasser.

Joan graduated as a Registered Nurse from Lima Memorial School of Nursing. She worked at Defiance Hospital and retired after twenty-seven years from Paradise Oaks Nursing Home in Cloverdale. She was a member of Continental Chapter # 129 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Cloverdale United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and helped with vacation Bible school. Joan helped with farming, loved to garden and was an avid reader. She loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a very kind and generous person and will be missed by allwho knew her.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental with Pastor Terry Porter officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. An Eastern Star Service will be conducted at 9 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow at a later date.
