KALIDA - Justin J. McCarthy, 74, of Kalida and formerly of Strongsville, died at 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, at The Meadows of Kalida.
He was born Feb. 1, 1938 in Cleveland to the late Justin and Irene (Weizer) McCarthy. Justin was a graduate of Shaker Heights High School and John Carroll University. On Oct. 19, 1963, he married Alice "Sis" Utendorf of Ottawa. She pre-deceased Justin on July 27, 2012.
Surviving is a brother, Dennis (Cheryl) McCarthy of Leawood, Kan., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Justin was a successful businessman who worked for several of the largest retailers in Cleveland. He was a devoted husband and spent many happy and loving years with Alice who was his dear wife and constant companion. Justin was an ardent fan of the Cleveland Browns, Indians and Cavaliers. Bob Feller was his baseball hero and Jim Brown was his favorite on the gridiron. He was a voracious reader of newspapers. It was rare to ever see him without a paper tucked under his arm. He also was a student of history and had a great love for reading the biographies of presidents, movie stars, and criminals. Justin's other love was food. He could recite the menus of many restaurants and was famous for his detailed descriptions of his favorite meals.
A memorial Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ottawa with Fr. Matt Jozefiak officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
