BATH TWP. - Continental scored twice in the final five minutes of their district semi-final against Kalida Saturday evening to record a 2-1 win in the Division III district finals at Bath High School.
The win sends Continental (13-2-2) to the Division III regional tournament Tuesday night against Oak Harbor at Ottawa Hills.
For nearly 75 minutes Saturday night Kalida's defense had done an excellent job of frustrating the Pirates offense by keeping a close eye on Continental standout Paige Ordway. A foul call on a Kalida defender just outside the penalty box gave Ordway a chance to tie the game.
Ordway took the direct kick for the Pirates and put a shot in the upper right hand side of the net to tie the score at 1-1 with 5:14 left to play.
With 1:45 left to play the Pirates scored the game winner when junior McKenna Scott launched a shot from 30 yards out on the Kalida goal. The ball hit the right post of the Kalida and trickled left across the goal mouth before sneaking into the left front corner of the goal for a 2-1 Pirate lead.
Continental then had to just keep Kalida from getting a shot off as they looked to tie the contest.
Kalida took a 1-0 lead with 3:19 left in the first half when senior Justine Verhoff made a run down the right side of the field and fired a shot towards the far post that snuck into the goal for a 1-0 halftime lead.
