COLUMBUS GROVE - Erica Fitzwater's two out single in the top of the tenth inning Friday evening helped give Continental a hard-fought 6-5 Putnam County League win over Columbus Grove.
As the two teams missed out on several scoring opportunities, Fitzwater gave the Pirates the lead in the top of the tenth with a single to right-center that scored Taylor Williamson with the tie breaking run. In the bottom of the tenth the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out before Pirate starter and winner Leva Weller used a groundball to second base to force the tying run at home plate before striking out the final batter she faced.
The Pirates went up 3-0 in the top of the third as Williamson blasted a three run home run. Columbus Grove came back with a run in the bottom of the inning then took the lead with four runs in the fourth inning. The Pirates tied the game in the fifth inning with two runs.
Williamson had a single, home run and three RBI for the Pirates, while McKenna Scott had a hit and RBI. Sloane Zachrich had two hits for the Pirates.
Kyrah Yinger had a single, double, triple for the Bulldogs with an RBI. Micah Stechschulte had two hits for Grove.
Continental is 1-0 in the PCL and 7-3 overall, while Grove is 1-1 in the league and 7-3 overall. The two teams shared the PCL softball title in 2012.
