PUTNAM COUNTY - The high school girls basketball season opens this Friday with five games on the local schedule. It will be a busy first week for three of the local teams as they have doubleheader weekends. The weekend also features the coaching debut for three new coaches in the girls ranks this season and one league encounter.
Although it's rare for teams to start the season with league contests, Pandora-Gilboa and Leipsic will do just that. The Rockets and Vikings will open the 2012-13 season as they play their Putnam County League contest Friday night. The contest will be held at Leipsic this season with the junior varsity contest tipping off at 6 p.m.
The contest also features the debut of new P-G head coach Jessica Liedtke. Liedtke is not new to the P-G program as she has been a volunteer assistant coach at the school in the past. She also has coached at the junior high level in Indiana in the past. Liedtke takes over the P-G program from Ken Brooks. The two teams play their Blanchard Valley Conference contest in January.
Among those teams that have double weekends are Ottoville, Miller City and Fort Jennings.
The Lady Big Green have a double weekend as they participate in the Van Wert Tip-Off Classic. The Big Green play the second game Friday night as they face the host Cougars. The first game has Wayne Trace and Crestview playing at 6 p.m. The two Friday night winners return Saturday night to play in the second game for the championship. Ottoville is the defending champion of the event.
Miller City has a double weekend as they host Tinora Friday night, then are at Ottawa-Glandorf on Saturday night. The Wildcats Friday night contest starts at 7 p.m. and the Saturday night contest begins at 7:30 p.m. Due to low numbers this season the Wildcats are playing a varsity only schedule.
The Titans opener Saturday night will mark the debut of new head coach Troy Yant. Yant takes over the Titans reigns this season after Lori Smith stepped down after last season.
Fort Jennings also has a double weekend as they host Lima Perry Friday night and are at Spencerville on Saturday night. The Musketeers also welcome in a new head coach this season as Kevin Horstman takes over the Musketeer program. Horstman has been a junior varsity coach for the Musketeers under departed head coach Matt Myerholtz.
Columbus Grove's girls basketball team also opens the season with two games. The Bulldogs open the season Saturday as they visit Lima Senior with a noon start. The Bulldogs then have a couple of days off before opening the home portion of their schedule against Hardin Northern Tuesday night.
The remainder of the schedule has the Kalida girls hosting Coldwater Friday night at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday night, Continental opens the season as they host Lincolnview at 6 p.m.
