BOWLING GREEN - Thursday was a bittersweet day for Kalida senior golfer Neil Recker.
Kalida's golf team missed advancing to state by a stroke Thursday, but Recker turned in an excellent round to advance to the Division III state tournament as an individual. The Division III state tournament will be held at the North Star Golf Resort in Sunbury starting Friday morning and continuing Saturday.
Recker shot a 74 to qualify as individual to state not on a qualifying team. Recker had a 42 after his first nine holes, then turned his game around on the second nine shooting a 32, which included an eagle on the Par 5, 14th hole. His 74 tied for medalist honors Thursday. The Wildcats finished fifth at the district tournament finishing with a 333, one stroke behind fourth place Van Buren at 332.
Cody Mathew had an 82 for the Wildcats, while Zach Erhart had an 84 and Austin Horstman a 93.
Leipsic's Jason Niese also just missed advancing as he shot a 79 to finish one stroke out of a playoff for the final individual state spot. Three golfers shot a 78 to force a playoff for the final two individual spots to state.
Miller City's Jared Fuka shot an 86, Fort Jennings' Kurt Warnecke had a 93 and Columbus Grove's Kody Griffith had a 98.
Ottoville's golf team finished with a 361 Thursday as they were led by Zach Weber with an 85 and Craig Odenweller with a 88. Derek Schimmoeller and Wesley Markward both had a 94.
