FORT JENNINGS — Both Fort Jennings and Lima Central Catholic had troubles getting into a consistent offensive rhythm in Tuesday night’s girls basketball struggle inside The Fort of Fort Jennings High School.

What aided the host Lady Musketeers was forcing 26 Lady Thunderbird turnovers and the visitors hitting a mere 4-of-15 at the foul line.

In the end, the hosts grabbed a 36-27 victory.

The Musketeers (1-1) came out with some kind of pressure defense — starting with a 2-2-1 full-court, then dropping into a 2-3 half-court zone — to bother the young guards of LCC (0-2). It worked well, forcing seven miscues and limiting them to 1-of-7 shooting in the first period. However, on the other end, LCC’s man-to-man forced five miscues and held the hosts to 1-of-8 shooting. LCC scored the first three points in the first 90 seconds and then didn’t score again until early in the second period. Fort Jennings’ Makenna Ricker (11 points; the only player in double digits) and her two foul shots at 4:58, a basket by Madison Neidert (3:28) and a free throw by Annabelle Wisner with two and a half minutes showing put the score at 5-3, hosts.

The turnovers slowed down some in the second period (a combined 7) and the offenses picked up some, combining for 7-of-25. There were four trades of the lead, the last at 9-8 on a basket by Fort Jennings’ Erica Rau with six minutes left. The teams battled most of the quarter on even terms after that and when LCC’s Rosie Williams hit the 1st-of-2 foul shots at 34 seconds, the Musketeer lead stood at 14-13.

There was an exchange of the lead in the third period — LCC’s last edge was 17-16 on a 3-ball by Josie Mohler at 6:25, only to see a basket by Lillian Wisner at 6:05 to put Fort Jennings in front permanently. Ricker caught fire from then on, scoring nine of her points in the period to put the Musketeers up 30-21 on Marissa Krietemeyer’s triple from just right of the key at 1:13 to finish off third-period scoring.

The closest the visitors could get was five — 32-27 on a 3-pointer by Mary Kelly Mulcahy at 2:50. The Musketeers had begin the milk the clock by the 5:48 mark and LCC couldn’t make a run to get closer.

LCC canned 9-of-30 shots to the 13-0f-37 for Fort Jennings, though they were 5-of-12 from 3 to the hosts’ 2-of-6.

“We started out in the zone because we felt we could pressure their guards on the perimeter and deal with the inside game; we figured they’d try to go there first,” Fort Jennings head coach Bill Calvelage explained. “We also applied pressure because we want to get out and run, especially with our speed throughout the lineup. Unless we forced turnovers tonight — which we did — LCC didn’t let us get out; they did a nice job getting back off rebounds.”

First-year LCC head coach Ron Williams knows he is a work in progress.

“We lost three senior guards from last year that did a lot of ballhandling and all that for us,” he added. “We have a lot of new guards that have very little varsity experience

— we have two freshmen playing a lot out front — and it’s going to be a work in progress. We’ll get better; it just takes time.”

LCC welcomes in St. John’s 6 p.m. Thursday.

Fort Jennings hosts Bluffton in a varsity-only clash at 1 p.m. Saturday.
