AYERSVILLE - Continental and Leipsic had trouble shaking one another Friday night during the championship game of the Ayersville Holiday Tournament. When the dust finally settled, it was the Lady Pirates that were celebrating a hard-fought 40-36 overtime win.
The win was the eighth straight for Continental as they moved to 8-1 on the season. Leipsic is 5-3 on the season.
Overtime was needed after the Vikings' Kelly Nadler hit a shot with 17 seconds left and Leispic missed a long three-pointer at the buzzer.
In overtime, the Pirates were up 35-31 before Leipsic battled back to tie the game at 36-36 on a three-pointer by Hailey Kreinbrink. From there Continental hit 4 of 6 free throws to seal the win as Leipsic was unable to make another shot. Vanessa Koppenhofer gave the Pirates the lead for good with two free throws with 27.8 seconds left.
Continental's Paige Ordway was named MVP of the tournament. Teammates Taylor Williamson and Leva Weller were named to the all-tournament team along with Leipsic's Amber Gerdeman and Shalynn Morman.
