COLUMBUS GROVE - Leipsic opened defense of their 2012 Putnam County League title Friday night by defeating Columbus Grove 6-5 in league action on the Bulldogs homefield.
The Vikings, who shared the PCL title last year with Kalida, matched a five run outburst by the Bulldogs with one of their own.
Leipsic took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Dylan Schey.
Columbus Grove took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Brandon Benroth had a two run single and Matt Jay a two run double. Blake Hoffman walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
The Bulldog lead didn't last long as the Vikings scored five times in the top of third inning. Daniel DeLaRosa, Schey, Pierce Henry and Logan Selhorst all had an RBI for Leipsic and one run scored on a Bulldog throwing error.
After the third inning pitching dominated the game as neither team could produce a run. Defense also helped out as both teams had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fifth inning.

Trey Roney took the loss for the Bulldogs as he went 4 1/3 innings. Josh Verhoff finished the game.
