Leipsic holds off Pandora-Gilboa

PANDORA - Pandora-Gilboa was on the doorstep of the Leipsic endzone late in the fourth quarter of their Blanchard Valley Conference contest.With the Rockets needing a score to overcome a five point deficit, Rocket quarterback Seth Schmenk spotted an open receiver in the endzone. Schmenk floated a pass towards the open receiver, only to have Leipsic safety Zach Kuhlman come over and intercept the pass.
Kuhlman's second interception in the last five minutes of the game helped preserve a 26-21 Leipsic win.
The win allows the Vikings to finish the season at 8-2, 6-2 in the BVC, and wrap up a home playoff game in Division VII, Region 24. The Rockets finish the season at 6-4, 4-4 in the BVC and will await the final OHSAA computer standings to see if they still have a shot at the playoffs.
Kuhlman ended the Rockets previous drive with an interception at the 15 yard line. The senior returned the pick 85 yards for an apparent score, but it was called back on a penalty.
Leipsic was unable to pick up a first down and punted the ball back to the Rockets with 1:33 left.
P-G drove to the Leipsic 23 where they had a fourth and one. Schmenk attempted to pick up a first down with a sneak, but the Rockets were called for a false start. On fourth and six, Schmenk went for it all and Kuhlman ended their hopes of the come-from-behind win.
Kuhlman had a big night leading the Viking offense as he threw three touchdown passes to Nate Brecht.
After a scoreless first quarter, Brecht got the Vikings on the scoreboard as he hauled in 20 yard scoring pass from Kuhlman.
The Rockets came right back as Reed Hovest returned the kickoff for a score. With the extra point P-G was up 7-6.
Leipsic came right back to get the lead as they went 62 yards in five plays as Brecht caught a 34 yard scoring pass. A two-point conversion pass to Brecht had Leipsic up 14-7.
The Rockets tied the game three plays later as Brad Walther caught a pass and took it 80 yards to the endzone for a score. With the extra point it was 14-14 with 5:58 left in the half.
Leipsic came back with a seven play, 68 yard drive as Jordan Chamberlin scored on an eight yard run. A conversion run failed leaving the Vikings up 20-14, which was the halftime score.
Leipsic pushed their lead to 26-14 in the third quarter as they put together a 14 play drive that ended with a three yard scoring pass to Brecht on a fourth and goal play from the three yard line. The two-point conversion run failed.
P-G scored near the end of the third quarter when Jacob Basinger went 58 yards for a score. With the extra point it was 26-21 Leipsic.
