DELPHOS - Columbus Grove's wrestling team came up short in their bid to upset Delphos St. John's in the regional quarterfinals of the OHSAA state team wrestling tournament Wednesday evening.

The Bulldogs went toe-to-toe against the top seeded Blue Jays before dropping a 40-30 decision.

Columbus Grove opened the evening with a 46-30 win over Spencerville, while the Blue Jays advanced with a 54-18 win over Van Wert. Van Wert had advanced with a 37-33 win over Ottawa-Glandorf in the opening match of the night.

The match between the Bulldogs and Blue Jays came down to the final two weight classes, both won by the St. John's by forfeit.

Picking up wins for the Bulldogs in the match were Preston Brubaker (106), Eli Schroeder (126), Andrew Burgei (160), Will Selhorst (182) and Alex Burgei (195).

In their win over Spencerville, the Bulldogs dominated the middle weight classes recording wins in all of the matches from 145 to 195. Five of the wins were by pin with the other win being a major decision.

Brubaker and Justin Calvelage (113) picked up wins in their weight classes.

Ottawa-Glandorf's match with Van Wert came down to the final two weight classes, both won by the Cougars.

Van Wert's Brody Couts defeated the Titans Colton Rieman, at 220, while Zack Thomas picked a major decision win over O-G's Shaun Gibson, 14-3.

Recording wins for the Titans were Le'on Palomo (106), Logan Balbaugh (113), Jon Basinger (120), Ralph Recker (152), Trenton Meyer (170) and Derek Ebbeskotte (195).
