ARCHBOLD — The goal of Ottawa-Glandorf's ACME baseball team was to win a game at the 2014 state tournament.
They came close Saturday, but Sunday was a different story.
Two Coldwater pitchers limited O-G to five hits and no runs as the Cavaliers eliminated the Titans from the state tournament with an 8-0 setback at Archbold's Memorial Park. The Titans finish the summer with an 8-11 record, while Coldwater advances to play Tuesday with a 19-2 record.
Cavalier lefthander Brandon Kunk and reliever Brody Hoyng combined on a five hitter Sunday afternoon. Kunk was the winning pitcher as he worked five innings giving up four of the hits. O-G had two base runners reach third base in the game and had the bases loaded in the fourth inning, but were unable to push a run across the plate.
Coldwater grabbed the lead in the second inning on an RBI double to left-center by Kraig Schoenherr and he later scored on a throwing error.
Coldwater scored runs in five straight innings against three Titan pitchers.
Ryan Maas started and took the loss for the Titans as he went 2 1/3 innings. Chandler Kersh and Ben Deitering both worked in relief.
Blake Spangler went 3 for 4 for the Cavaliers, all singles, and scored three times. Schoenherr, Derek Thobe, Petey Post and Jack Hemmelgarn all had two hits as Coldwater banged out 14 hits in the game.
Deitering had a double for the Titans. Austin Verhoff, Kersh, Noah Recker and Jordan Diemer all had a single for O-G, which was making their second straight appearance in the state ACME tournament.
