LIMA - Ottawa-Glandorf outhit Lima Central Catholic in its Division III district semi-final at the University of Northwestern Ohio diamond Thursday evening.
Ottawa-Glandorf's Cody Bockrath attempts to avoid a tag by Lima Central Catholic catcher Brad Stolly during their game. Bockrath was called in a close play.
However, the Titans were unable to come up with a clutch hit to drive in runs against the T-Birds. O-G's inability to get that key resulted in the T-Birds handing the Titans a 3-1 setback in the second of two games.
With the win, LCC advances to Saturday's Division III district final against Lima Bath, a 9-5 winner over Patrick Henry in the first game. The Titans close the 2013 season at 16-5, while LCC is 18-12.
O-G outhit the T-Birds 7-6 for the game, but were unable to get that clutch hit as they left eight runners on base in the game. And when they did get a base hit that could have scored runs the LCC defense came through with big plays as their outfield threw two runners out at home plate.
Ottawa-Glandorf left runners in scoring position in the first (second) and third (third) innings before they had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth inning on an extremely close play at the plate.
LCC also had trouble scoring early as O-G starter Jaylen Von Sossan used a first inning strikeout to leave the bases full of T-Bird runners. In the second inning, Von Sossan stranded a runner at second base as he retired the next six LCC batters before the T-Birds pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the LCC fourth, Corey O'Dowd lined a single to right and took second base on a groundball to first base for the second out. Ben Stolly followed with a groundball to third base that was misplayed for an error that allowed O'Dowd to score the first run of the game.
O-G had a chance to tie the game in the fifth inning as Tanner Schimmoeller walked with one out, Pinch runner Tyson Yungman took second on a ground out before Cory Imm walked and Brad Croy lined a single to left. Yungman attempted to score, but a fine throw to home by Jacob Judy nailed the O-G runner at the plate.
LCC went up 3-0 in the bottom of the inning as Colin Stolly walked before an out. Nick Watkins followed with a single to left before Connor Dee hit a hard smash to first base. O-G's Jake Hashbarger knocked the ball down, but had it roll away from him. Schimmoeller picked up the ball and his hurried throw to first was low and skipped past Von Sossan for an error. That allowed Stolly to score as Watkins moved to third and Dee took second. A sacrifice fly to center field by Drew Jennings scored the T-Birds final run.
"Those errrors cost us," O-G coach Nick Miller said. "They capitalized on them as our first error led to their first run after we dropped a ball in right field that should have been an out. And they came back and got a big hit when they needed it. That was the difference in the game. They delivered with two outs and we did not. We left a lot guys on in scoring position. They found a way to scratch out three runs and that was enough for the day."
O-G scored in the top of the sixth as Tyler Zender singled and stole second base. After two flyballs to center field for outs, Drew Schierloh doubled down the left field line to score Zender. A strikeout ended the inning. O-G had two base runners in the seventh before the final out was recorded.
Colin Stolly picked up the win as he went the distance allowing a run on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Dee and O'Dowd both had two hits for the T-Birds.
Von Sossn took the loss as he allowed three unearned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Croy and Zender both had two hits for the Titans.
