CANTON — The Ottawa-Glandorf swimmers competing in the Division II state meet at Canton Thursday evening were all making their first appearance.
Participating at state for the first time didn't seem to bother the young swimmers as they all competed well despite not making it to any of the finals on Friday.
Ottawa-Glandorf's 200 Medley Relay team of Kathryn Samuelson, Ashley Siefker, Amber Ellerbrock and Briana Fenbert finished 21st in 1:54.53, which was just off their district qualifying time.
In the 100 Backstroke, Samuelson finished 20th in 1:00.05, which was four-tenths of a second quicker than her district time and lowered her school record time.
In the 200 Freestyle, Luke Kleman finished 20th with a time of 1:48.64, which also was slightly better than his district time and lowered his school record in the event.
“They all performed very well for this being their first time year,” O-G coach Lisa Metzger said. “Being at a different site, before a large crowd and competing at state can be nerve racking, but they handled it well and all swam good times. The good thing is that I have them all back next year and they have this taste that will drive them to get back here next year.”
