COLUMBUS - Putnam County athletes won one state championship and were runners-up twice during the field events Friday afternoon in the Division III state track and field meet.

Columbus Grove's Collin Grothaus won the championship, while teammate Dakota Vogt and Leipsic's Derek Steffan received runner-up medals.
Grothaus won the Division III pole vault as he outdueled Seneca East junior Zach Gregg. Grothaus won the pole vault when he cleared 15-3 on his third attempt and Gregg missed. Until that height, Gregg had the lead on Grothaus as the Grove vaulter had two misses at a lower height when Gregg cleared it on his first attempt.
The pole vault championship was the fifth won by a Grove athletes, four male and one female.
Vogt came up short in his bid to give a second state championship on the day. Vogt fnished second in the discus with a throw of 169-9. Rootstown's David Paliscak won the event with a throw of 173-1. Vogt's second place throw came on his second attempt in the finals.
Leipsic's Derek Steffan finished second in the high jump despite clearing his personal best. Steffan cleared a personal best 6-6, but didn't win based on fewer misses at lower heights after both jumpers failed to clear 6-7.
Later in the meet, Steffan finished 10th in the long jump.
