P-G, Grove 3200 relay teams are district champs

FINDLAY — The Pandora-Gilboa and Columbus Grove 3200 Relay teams opened the Division III district meet in a big way Thursday evening at Liberty-Benton High School.
Both the Lady Rockets and Bulldogs cruised to wins in the 3200 relay earning trips to the regional next week in Tiffin. Three individuals from the Grove girls team and one female and male from P-G also punched their tickets to the regional, which included another district champion for the Bulldogs.
The Tiffin Division III regional will be held Wednesday and Friday starting at 4 p.m. each day. The top four in each event there advances to the state tournament.
The Lady Rockets started the meet in a big way winning the 3200 relay by 11 seconds over runner-up Van Buren. The team of Anna Abelovska, Olivia Velasquez, Mary Hroudove and Breana Hovest won the event in 10:10.44. Van Buren was second in 10:21.28.
Columbus Grove finished eighth in the event.
The Lady Bulldogs advanced two athletes in the shot put Thursday as Lyne'aDiller won the event with a throw of 38-7 and Aubrey Fruchey was second with a throw of 37-0 3/4.
The Rockets Mackenzie Swary advanced to the regional in the shot put as she finished fourth with a throw of 33-1 1/2.
Alexis Ricker finished fourth in the high jump for the Bulldogs clearing 4-10.
P-G's Tyler Boes was the runner-up in the discus with a throw of 146-4. Columbus Grove's Rece Roney just missed advancing as he finished fifth with a top throw of 141-3.
The Grove boys won the district championship in the 3200 relay as the team of Alex Giesige, Colton Grothaus, Lee Altenburger and Bryce Sharrits won in a time of 8:23.98 as they finished two and a half seconds in front of runner-Riverdale in 8:23.98.
For the first time in several years, the Bulldogs failed to get a pole vaulter out of the district meet. The Bulldogs string of years advancing a vaulter ended as Kyle Shafer finished sixth and Caiden Grothaus was seventh.
The district meet concludes Saturday with the remaining field events starting at 11 a.m. and the running finals at 12:30 p.m.
