DEFIANCE, Ohio - After the opening day of the Defiance College Spring Invitational, the Yellow Jackets Men's Golf team sits in seventh place and sits in a good position to reach the top five on Sunday in the final round.
Zach Weber (Ottoville) had a strong first round, shooting a 76 to lead the Yellow Jackets on the day. Weber sits in 12th going into day two. He shot a 36 on the front nine Saturday and followed it up with a 40 on the back holes. Weber's round included four birdies.
Mike Ross shot just one stroke above Weber with a 77 in the opening round. Ross had a consistent round, shooting a 39 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine holes to wrap up the day in a tie for 22nd place.
Jake Tinsley also had a strong performance for Defiance College shooting a 79 in the first 18 holes. Tinsley started out with a great front nine score of 37, but struggled a little bit with a 42 for the second nine. Tinsley sits in a tie for 28th place heading into the final day.
Hurst Talbott and Derek Lucas, both shot 80 for the opening 18 holes of the invitational, ending the day in a tie for 36th. Talbott finished with a 38 on the front and fired a 42 on the back holes. Lucas, a non-scoring member of the DC, shot a 41 on the front half and came in with a 39 on the back nine.
Josh DeGroff sits in sixth place for Defiance after day one and is in a tie for 53rd overall. DeGroff shot a front nine total of 43 and followed it up with a back nine of 42 for an 85.
Ryan Edelbrock, another non-scoring member for Defiance, shot 43 on both the front and back holes, ending day one with an 86.
Rick Girona wrapped up day one for the Yellow Jackets with an 87 on day one. After shooting a 42 on the way out, Girona finished the back nine with a 45 and is currently eight for Defiance and 59th overall.
The Yellow Jackets will wrap the Defiance College Invitational at the Eagle Rock Golf Course on Sunday with the final 18 holes of the 36-hole tournament.
