Toledo holds on for 85-78 road win over Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Rian Pearson scored 24 points on 9-of-15 shooting, leading Toledo past Ball State 85-78 on Wednesday night.
Matt Smith added 19 points, Reese Holliday chipped in 16 off the bench, and Julius Brown had 12 points and 10 assists for the Rockets (9-10, 4-3 Mid-American), who shot 52 percent from the floor.
Jauwan Scaife led the Cardinals (7-11, 2-5) with 23 points. Majok Majok, the reigning MAC West player of the week, had 16 points and 15 rebounds, improving upon his conference-leading average of 10.1 rebounds per game.
A back-and-forth first half saw Ball State lead 37-35 on Majok's layup at the halftime buzzer, and another Majok basket, with 11:42 to play, tied the game at 51. Toledo began to pull away after that, leading by as many as 15 before Scaife's layup with 12 seconds left cut the Rockets' lead to 81-78. But Ball State could get no closer.
Bowling Green 55
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - Zeke Marshall scored 15 points as Akron extended its winning streak to 12 games with a 68-55 victory over Bowling Green on Wednesday night.
The Zips (16-4, 7-0), off to their best Mid-American Conference start ever, remained one of two undefeated MAC teams. They'll host the other, Ohio, on Saturday.
Akron broke a 9-9 tie with a 14-5 run capped by two dunks by Marshall. The Zips limited the Falcons (7-13, 2-5) to 18.5 percent first-half shooting (5 of 27) and led 28-17 at halftime.
Bowling Green never got closer than seven points in the second half and trailed by as many as 20. Akron shot 57.1 percent (16 of 28) in the second half, when Nick Harney scored all 10 of his points. Demetrius Treadwell finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Chauncey Orr had 16 points for Bowling Green, and A'uston Calhoun had 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Northern Illinois 67
Kent State 65
DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - Abdel Nader's go-ahead jumper with 2.2 seconds left sealed the deal for Northern Illinois which held off Kent State 67-65 on Wednesday night.
Northern Illinois (5-14, 3-4 MAC) led 63-54 with 2:28 remaining in the game but the Golden Flashes used an 11-2 run capped off by Devareaux Manley's 3-pointer to tie it at 65 with 31 seconds left.
After Nader's jumper, Kent State's Randal Holt got a look from beyond the arc to win it but just missed as the clock expired.
The Golden Flashes never led in the contest.
Nader scored 26 points including four 3-pointers and was 8 for 11 from the free-throw line. He led the Huskies with 11 rebounds.
Darren Goodson scored 18 points and pulled 10 rebounds for Kent State (11-10, 2-5). Kris Brewer had 14 points and was a perfect 10 for 10 from the line.
Western Michigan 72
Miami (Ohio) 68
OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - Shayne Whittington scored 13 points and Western Michigan won its fifth consecutive game, defeating Miami (Ohio) 72-68 Wednesday night.
The Broncos (13-7, 5-2 Mid-American Conference) overcame 23 turnovers by shooting 60 percent (12 of 20) in the second half to the RedHawks' 28.6 percent (8 of 28).
Miami (7-12, 2-5), which lost its fourth straight, led 35-32 at halftime, but the Broncos started the second half with a 14-5 run. They led 54-45 after David Brown's steal and three-point play with 9:20 left.
The RedHawks rallied to lead 63-62 with 4:07 remaining, but Darius Paul's layup and another steal and three-point play by Brown put Western Michigan ahead to stay.
Reggie Johnson missed a jumper that could have given Miami a tie with 0:13 left.
Paul scored 12 points and Nate Hutcheson and Brandon Pokley had 11 each for the Broncos.
Will Felder's 17 points and 13 rebounds led Miami.
