Toys 4 Tots collection boxes have been distributed to businesses and organizations around the county, including here at the Putnam Sentinel, with assistance from the Putnam County Junior Optimists Club. The group recently worked to assemble the collection boxes. First started in 1947 by Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks and his wife Diane in Los Angeles, the Commandant transformed it into a national community action program the following year. To date, 566 million toys have been distributed and 258 million children supported. Readers are encouraged to continue this success locally by donating a toy at a participating business this Christmas season. (Photo submitted)
