KALIDA - 1820 BrewWerks, a Kalida-based brewery with two manufacturing locations in Columbus Grove and Glandorf, will be celebrating its two-year anniversary.

“Our niche as a brewery is the fact that we are hyper-local,” 1820 part-owner Andrew Wehri in a Monday interview. “We get as many ingredients as we can from Putnam County and Northwest Ohio.”

75% of all of the BrewWerks’ beers are made with grain from Barley Five Malt House, its manufacturer in Columbus Grove, Wehri said. 10 of the brewery’s 14 craft beers, he continued, were made completely with ingredients from across Putnam County.

Though the brewery officially opened its doors in 2020, the venture began in 2018 when Wehri and the bar’s other part owners saw barley production opportunities at a home-brew shop in Putnam County.

“People need food and they beer,” Wehri said. “We decided to just keep rolling with it.”

Though most of its operations and distribution are locally based, 1820 BrewWerks has seen customers from all over the globe, including all 50 states.Every visiting customer has the opportunity to place their pin on their part of the world, Wehri said, eagerly pointing out the pins located as far as southern Australia and remote parts of the Pacific Ocean.

Vermont and Mississippi took the longest to fill on Wehri’s United States map. The first pin in the map’s 50th state was placed on Aug. 25, according to the brewery’s Facebook page.

“It was neat to start seeing it fill,” Wehri said. “I started seeing where people were coming from: Toledo, Cincinnati, Columbus and more.

“It really makes you open your eyes. It’s great to see we’re able to affect the lives of so many.”
