PUTNAM COUNTY — The OSU Extension office in Putnam County has been busy planning for several winter educational programs that happen from Jan. through March before the farming season begins. This year, we have numerous programs that may be of interest to you, to family members, or those you work with. Here is a brief description of some of these programs. Jan. 4-5, Soil Health Workshop. We are offering a program from 8-4 on Jan. 4 and from 8-12 on Jan. 5 in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and former Putnam County extension educator Jim Hoorman. The workshop will cover the basics of soil health, water quality, cover crops and their management, and many more topics. The workshop costs $10 and includes lunch and all materials.

Jan. 25, Feb. 22, and March 22, On the Farm and In the Garden. We will be having a series of programs this spring around current issues On the Farm and In the Garden. The morning session will focus on agriculture issues from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.. The afternoon session will cover gardening topics from 1 to 2 p.m.. There is no cost to attend, and coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Topics will be announced at the beginning of each month.

Feb. 5, Agronomy Night. Putnam County’s annual Agronomy Night will be held at the Kalida Knights of Columbus Hall beginning at 6 p.m.. The event includes dinner and is free of charge, courtesy of local sponsors and the Ohio Soybean Council. Program topics include weed management, climate effects on crop develop.m.ent, on-farm research results, local resources, door prizes, and more. No RSVP is necessary.

Feb. 6 and March 13, Pesticide and Fertilizer Recertification. The Putnam County pesticide and agricultural fertilizer recertification programs for private applicators will be offered at the Ottawa American Legion Hall on Monday, Feb. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. and again on Tuesday, March 13 from 8 to 12. Registration is required. The program cost is $40. Fertilizer recertification only is $10.

March 19, Putnam Agricultural Fertilizer Certification Program. This 3-hour program provides training for farmers to acquire an Ohio agricultural fertilizer certification. The program will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the OSU Extension office and costs $35. Please call the office to register for this event.

March 29, New Private Pesticide Applicator Crash Course. We will again be offering a 3-hour crash course program for anyone interested in obtaining an Ohio private pesticide applicator license. The course covers basic information from the study materials. Attendees may take their exam following the class at 1 p.m.. The program will be at the extension office and costs $20.
