Ottawa Elementary - Putnam Sentinel

OTTAWA – A special contest is planned next Wednesday, May 8, and Friday, May 10, at Ottawa Elementary School. The school is looking for judges from community businesses who will assist in the competition.

Seventh and eighth grade students will be taking part in “The Amazing Shake” competition that originated from the importance of a good handshake as the foundation for appropriate interpersonal skills.

“Our goal is to help prepare our students for tough situations that they may face in their future career,” said Audrey Beaning, Ottawa Elementary principal.
She said they are seeking representatives from community businesses to help judge the Ottawa Elementary students on their soft skills such as having a firm handshake, making eye contact, being confident and thinking on their feet to handle various scenarios.

The school will have everything prepared for the judges in advance. This will be the first round of a three-round competition, and will involve approximately 80 students.

The expectations of the judges are to provide straightforward and honest feedback to students as they compete in stations. Volunteers will judge students based on their soft skills such as handshake, eye contact, charisma, confidence, appearance, manners and ability to think on their feet to handle a situation.

Judging times are May 8 from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday, May 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

If you are willing to help with one of both times of competition, please contact Principal Audrey Beaning at beining.a@ottawaglandorf.org or call 419-523-4290.
