KALIDA — For its Red Ribbon Week, Kalida Elementary partnered with The Meadows of Kalida to collect non-perishable food items. Once collected, the food was donated to The Continental Circle of Friends Food Pantry which operates out of The Continental United Methodist Church.

This particular food pantry is associated with The West Ohio Food Bank located out of Lima, with multiple different Putnam County partner agencies such as The Circle of Friends Food Pantry. In 2016, The West Ohio Food Bank provided 223,569 meals for its partners in Putnam County. Collectively, the two facilities have donated around 750 lbs of food.

The Red Ribbon Week theme at Kalida Elementary for this year was, “Life is Your Journey, Travel Drug Free!” Each day students and faculty dressed up to show that they are proud to be drug free. The focus for the week’s last day was, ” ‘Lei’ Off Drugs!” with students dressing up in tropical vacation wear.

As part of Red Ribbon Week, students felt the importance of giving and decided to have a can food drive. With Thanksgiving right around the corner Kalida Elementary felt that it was important for the school’s community to do its best in making sure everyone enjoys a delicious Thanksgiving dinner.

In addition to donations collected in this effort, Meadows of Kalida had also previously donated roughly 3,500 lbs. to this same food pantry back in August for their 2018 Independence from Hunger Food Drive. Assisting with that donation were local businesses in Kalida, including Unverferth Manufacturing, Kalida Telephone, Rachel’s Hair on the Square, Real Living CCR Realtors in Kalida, and Kalida Family Outreach Center.
