COLUMBUS GROVE — Columbus Grove knew they would have to beat Kalida to earn a share of the Putnam County League baseball crown Tuesday evening.

And that’s just what the Bulldogs were able to do.

The Wildcats and Bulldogs battled for nine innings before Columbus Grove used a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 3-2 win over Kalida.

With the win, Columbus Grove and Kalida share the PCL with 6-1 records.

After Kalida tied the game in the third inning at 2-2, pitchers Nick Woods, Grove, and Owen Recker, Kalida, put goose eggs on the scoreboard.

After a one-two-three inning by Bulldog reliever Alex Schneider in the top of the ninth, Columbus Grove mounted a rally against Owen Recker in the bottom of the inning.

Brady Rudasil started the Grove ninth with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Grant McCauley. After a sacrifice bunt and fly out to left, McCauley moved to third base on a wild pitch after Kurt Griffith walked. Freshman Luke Otto sent the Bulldog fans home happy with a line single to left ending the game.

Schneider recorded the win in relief pitching a scoreless ninth inning. In eight innings of work, Woods allowed two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts as he became the schools all-time leader in strikeouts for a career.

Dylan Mason had two hits for the Bulldogs (14-6) and Schneider a single and RBI.

Owen Recker took the loss in relief of starter Josh Recker, who went the first two innings. Otto's single was the only hit surrendered by Owen Recker in 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out nine and walked three batters. Josh Recker allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Zach von der Embse had two hits for Kalida, while Owen Recker and Matt Kehres both had a single and RBI.
