SIDNEY — Coldwater's big play offense stood out Saturday night against Columbus Grove during a Division VI state semi-final playoff game at Sidney.

Of the Cavaliers six touchdowns in their 41-27 win five of them came on plays of 25 yards or more against a Bulldog defense that had played well in the playoffs. The win sends Coldwater (11-0) to the Division VI title game next Sunday against New Middleton Springfield at Fortress Obetz, while the Bulldogs saw their season end at 10-1.

Columbus Grove had a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter as Rece Verhoff kicked a 30 yard field with 2:35 left in the opening quarter. Columbus Grove took their opening drive and drove the Cavalier 25 only to see the Cavalier defense stop a fourth down run as Columbus Grove looked to make an early statement.

Coldwater quickly answered back with a five play scoring drive as Myles Blasingame scored on a 36 yard run with 1:04 left in the opening quarter. Coldwater had a 6-3 lead as the extra point try missed.

After a quick three and out by the Grove offense, the Cavaliers were back in the endzone one play later as Zack McKibben scored on a 79 yard run as he broke a couple of tackles on his way to the endzone.

Columbus Grove showed their big play ability on their next drive as Gabe Clement got behind the Cavalier secondary and hauled in a Blake Reynolds pass for a 68 yard scoring play with 10:58 left in the half to make it a 13-10 game.

Unfortunately that was the last time the Bulldogs had Clement in their offense as he injured a knee on the next defensive series and didn't return to the game.

After scoring on a pair of long runs, the Cavaliers passing game came into play as Blasingame found Justin Hartings with a 33 yard scoring pass. With the extra point the Cavaiers had a 20-10 lead.

Columbus Grove answered back with a 10 play scoring drive that saw them at the Coldwater 15 yard line. The Cavalier defense stiffened at this points as they forced a pair of incomplete passes and stuffed a run for no gain bringing up a fourth and 10 for the Bulldogs. Verhoff came on to try a 32 yard field goal and put it right down the middle to make the score 20-13.

With just 1:15 left in the first half, the Cavaliers didn't sit on their seven point lead as they drove 80 yards in eight plays as Blasingame found Tyler Schwieterman with a 30 yard scoring pass with 22 seconds left in the first half. The Cavaliers were facing third and 15 from the Grove 30 when the two connected on the touchdown.

With limited time left in the opening half, the Bulldogs tried to answer as Jacksen Schroeder hauled in an 18 yard pass before Reynolds and Jon Banal hooked up on a 20 yard pass play. With just two seconds left on the clock, Verhoff came on to try a 42 yard field goal. The kick had the distane, but clanged off the left upright leaving the Cavaliers with a 27-13 halftime lead.

After the teams traded punts on their opening drives of the third quarter, the Cavaliers pushed their lead to 34-13 with 3:29 left in the third quarter when Blasingame scored on a two yard run.

Columbus Grove answered back with a methodical 14 play drive that was capped off by a Reynolds seven yard run with 10:03 left in the game.

The Bulldogs attempted an onside kick that was recovered by the Cavaliers at their own 45. Coldwater used five plays to answer the Bulldog score as McKibben scored on a 37 yard run with 7:39 left to play.

Columbus Grove scored the final touchdown of the night as Reynolds scored on a five yard run. The Bulldogs hit three long passes to move the ball as Colin Metzger had catches of 31 and 22 yards and Braylon Baxter had one for 12 yards.

Coldwater got the ball back and picked up some key first downs to run out the clock.
