COLUMBUS - Four Putnam County wrestlers will be in action Friday as they advanced past the first day of the 2019 Division III state tournament at the Schottenstein Center on the Ohio State University campus.

Advancing to Friday were Ottawa-Glandorf’s Isaac Hernandez and Danny Rosales along with Columbus Grove’s Dakota Sargent and Jeff Meyer.

The Division III state tournament resumes Friday morning with the Division III championship quarterfinals at 10 a.m. and the second round of consolation matches at 12:10 p.m.



Hernandez dominated his match with Caldwell junior Collin Wiley in the 132 pound division.

Hernandez scored a take down early in the first period and added three back points as he led 5-0 after one. In the second period, Hernandez started on top of opponents and after avoiding a near escape by Wiley, put the Caldwell wrestler on his back, closing out the match with a pin at the 3:18 mark with a pin.

Rosales advanced in the 182 pound division with a 6-2 win over Tristan Bush of Johnstown-Monroe.

After a scoreless first period, Rosales took a 3-0 lead in the second period with an escape point and a take down. Rosales outscored Bush, a senior, 3-2 in the third period for the win.

Rosales (28-6) will face Chris Langguth of Rootstown in the quarterfinals Friday morning.

Bulldog sophomore Jeff Meyer opened his tournament run defeating Elmwood senior Kain  Brossia 7-1 in the opening round of the 285 pound division.

Meyer had a 2-0 lead after the opening period and was up 5-0 after the second period. Brossia managed an escape point in the third period before wrapped up with a win with another take down late in the third period.

Meyer will face Liam Kirkpatrick of Newark Catholic in the championship quarterfinals Friday morning.

Junior Dakota Sargent went 1-1 on the first day of the tournament in the 195 pound division.

Sargent dropped his opening round match to Oak Harbor senior Jake Sage 6-4 before rallying in the evening to defeat Jordan Sanders of Newscomerstown 10-3. Sargent (11-8) advances to the second round of consolations Friday afternoon.

Bulldog junior Dylan Sargent saw his tournament run end on Thursday with a pair of close losses in the 220 pound division.

Sargent fell to Anthony Czap of North Lima South Range 6-5, then in the consolation round dropped a 3-1 decision to Hunter Braithwaite of West Jefferson in sudden victory.

Sargent ends his season with a 37-11 record.

O-G senior Matt Schmersal saw his tournament end Thursday evening as he was pinned by Ian Joyce of Glouster Trimble in 28 seconds. Schmersal dropped into the consolation bracket as he was pinned by Liberty Center Caleb Carpenter (35-1) in 2:59 of their match.

Schmersal ends his season with a 30-16 record.

Ottawa-Glandorf is tied for 21st place in the team standings after day one with six points. Columbus Grove is tied for 50th with three points.
