PUTNAM COUNTY — Seven Putnam County students have been busy this week at the Ohio State Fair in Columbus as they participate in the All-Ohio State Fair Band and All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir during the 2015 fair. The fair opened on July 29 and will close this Sunday, Aug. 9.

The participants include Elyse Schroeder and Rebekah Flores, Leipsic, Julia E. Arnold, Stacey Nuveman, Theron Oren and Christopher Schreiber, Ottawa-Glandorf, and Cody Kemper, Ottoville.

The Band and Choir is composed of a total of 379 superior musicians (217 in band, 162 in choir) from 65 counties and 146 high schools all across Ohio.

The All-Ohio State Fair Band, with students ranging from grades 9 – 12, learned more than 50 pieces of concert music to prepare for the Fair and John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever!” closes each of the performances. Once the Fair opened the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir sings six to eight concerts a day and marches up to ten miles a day to various performance sites around the 360-acre Ohio Expo Center.

The All-Ohio State Fair Band and Youth Choir will also be performing on Aug. 2 at 1 pm in the WCOL Celeste Center.

Dr. Jon Peterson began directing the Choir in 2014. The Band has been under the direction of Donald Santa-Emma since 1999. Members of both the Band and Choir are selected based on a number of factors including student ability and recommendation from choral or band directors. The All-Ohio State Fair Band was founded in 1925 and the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir was founded in 1963.
